If you've been looking at solar quotes or talking to electricians about upgrading your BESCOM connection, you've likely encountered the term "3-phase meter." For many homeowners, this is where the technical conversation gets confusing fast.
This guide explains what a 3-phase meter is, how it differs from the single-phase meter most homes have, the different types available in India, and — most importantly — when you need one, especially if you're planning a solar installation.
Single-phase vs three-phase: the fundamental difference
To understand the meter, you first need to understand what it's measuring.
Single-phase electricity uses two wires — one live (phase) wire and one neutral wire — to deliver alternating current (AC) at 230 volts. This is what most Indian homes run on. All your standard appliances — fans, lights, TV, refrigerator, smaller ACs — work perfectly on single-phase supply. BESCOM allocates a sanctioned load up to approximately 5 kW on a single-phase connection for most residential consumers.
Three-phase electricity uses three separate live wires (called R, Y, and B phases — red, yellow, and blue) plus a neutral wire, delivering power at 415 volts between phases. The three phases are offset by 120° from each other, which means power delivery is smoother, more efficient, and capable of handling much larger loads.
A 3-phase meter measures the electricity flowing across all three phases simultaneously, recording total consumption (and for bi-directional net meters, total export) across the entire connection.
Why three-phase exists — and what it actually does for you
The core advantage of three-phase power is load distribution. Instead of running all your electrical load through one wire, it spreads across three. This delivers several practical benefits:
Higher capacity without cable overheating. A single-phase connection tops out at about 5–6 kW continuous load before requiring thick, expensive cabling. A three-phase connection handles 15 kW+ with equivalent or lighter cabling because each phase carries only a third of the total load.
Better performance for large motors and equipment. Three-phase motors (in lifts, large pumps, industrial machinery) run more efficiently and with less vibration on three-phase supply than on single-phase. This is why any building with lifts or a large pump requires three-phase.
Voltage stability. With three phases, if one phase is slightly loaded differently from another, the system self-balances. Single-phase lines under heavy load experience more voltage sag, which causes appliances to run inefficiently or malfunction.
More solar capacity. This is directly relevant if you're planning a large rooftop solar system. Most DISCOMs in India, including BESCOM, cap single-phase net-metered solar systems at 5 kWp. If you want to install more than 5 kWp, you will typically need to upgrade to a three-phase connection and a corresponding three-phase bi-directional meter.
Types of 3-phase meters in India
1. Electromechanical (rotating disc) meter
The older technology — a spinning aluminium disc whose rotation rate is proportional to power consumption. You've probably seen these at older properties: the circular window with the rotating disc.
These are being phased out by BESCOM and other DISCOMs across Karnataka as part of the national smart meter rollout programme. They cannot measure export (only import), making them incompatible with solar net metering. If your property still has one of these, it will be replaced as part of the net metering application process.
2. Electronic digital meter
The standard technology for the past 15 years. A digital meter uses microcontroller-based circuitry to measure voltage, current, and power factor across each phase. It displays total consumption in kWh on a digital screen and can be read remotely in some configurations. Accuracy is significantly higher than electromechanical meters.
Most existing three-phase connections in Bangalore have electronic digital meters. These can be retrofitted with bi-directional measurement capability for solar net metering, or replaced entirely with a bi-directional model.
3. Bi-directional (import-export) meter
Specifically relevant for solar. A bi-directional meter records electricity flowing in both directions:
- Import register: Power drawn from BESCOM
- Export register: Power sent back to BESCOM from your solar system
For net metering under BESCOM's SRTPV scheme, a bi-directional meter is mandatory. BESCOM installs this meter (replacing your existing single or three-phase meter) as part of the solar commissioning process at no additional cost to you beyond the facilitation fee paid during the SRTPV application.
A three-phase bi-directional meter does all of the above across all three phases, making it the required meter for any three-phase solar installation.
4. Smart meter
The current generation of meters being rolled out under India's NSGM (National Smart Metering Programme). Smart meters communicate over cellular networks, Wi-Fi, or power-line communication — sending real-time consumption data to BESCOM's servers and to a consumer app on your phone.
Key features of smart meters:
- Real-time consumption and export monitoring (not just end-of-month billing)
- Remote meter reading (no physical meter reader visit required)
- Remote connection/disconnection capability (BESCOM can manage supply remotely)
- Tamper alerts
- Four-quadrant metering for solar — can track active and reactive power import and export
BESCOM is actively rolling out smart meters across Bangalore in 2025–26. If you're installing solar, there's a reasonable chance your bi-directional meter will be a smart meter model. This is a benefit — the consumer app gives you real-time visibility of your solar export and net billing position throughout the month.
5. CT-operated (LTCT) meter
Used for high-load connections where the current is too high to pass directly through the meter's internal current coils. A Current Transformer (CT) is installed around the live wire — it measures the current and sends a proportionally reduced signal to the meter. The meter then calculates total consumption based on the CT ratio.
CT meters are common in commercial and industrial connections above 50–100 A, and in larger apartment buildings. If you're installing solar on a commercial property with a CT meter, your installer needs to confirm that the existing CT meter is compatible with bi-directional measurement, or whether a meter replacement is needed.
When does a Bangalore homeowner need a 3-phase meter?
You already have a 3-phase connection
Many homes above 2,000 square feet, homes with multiple large ACs, homes with lifts or large water pumps, and most independent villas on larger plots have or should have a three-phase connection. If you currently have a three-phase meter and you're adding solar, your installer will arrange for the existing three-phase meter to be replaced with a three-phase bi-directional meter.
You want to install a solar system larger than 5 kWp
If your current consumption requires a system above 5 kWp (typically homes with monthly bills above ₹4,000–5,000 using multiple ACs), you will need to:
1. Apply for a load enhancement to increase your BESCOM sanctioned load above 5 kW
2. Upgrade from single-phase to three-phase supply
3. Install a three-phase bi-directional meter
The load enhancement and three-phase upgrade add 2–4 weeks to your solar installation timeline and a small additional cost (BESCOM's load enhancement charges). Your installer should advise you on this before you finalise your system size.
Your existing single-phase connection is running near capacity
If your current single-phase connection is frequently tripping the main breaker or you're running borderline on your sanctioned load, a three-phase upgrade makes sense independent of solar — it gives you capacity headroom, more stable voltage, and allows larger appliances or additional ACs.
You're a commercial or industrial customer
Any commercial or industrial solar installation above minimal capacity uses three-phase supply as a matter of course. Three-phase bi-directional meters are standard for all C&I solar connections.
The bi-directional meter and BESCOM net metering billing
Once BESCOM installs your bi-directional meter (single or three-phase), your monthly billing works as follows:
- At the start of the billing period, the meter records both import and export registers
- At the end of the billing period, BESCOM calculates:
- Import kWh (power you drew from BESCOM)
- Export kWh (surplus solar you fed to the grid)
- Net position: if import > export, you pay for the difference at your applicable tariff; if export > import, the credit is carried forward or paid out at the BESCOM export tariff
For a three-phase connection, this calculation happens across all three phases combined — the meter aggregates total import and total export across all phases for the net billing calculation.
Common questions about 3-phase meters and solar
Does BESCOM charge more for a three-phase solar meter?
The bi-directional meter itself is provided by BESCOM as part of the solar commissioning process. The facilitation fee for the SRTPV application (₹1,000–2,000 for residential systems) covers the meter installation. There are no additional meter charges for three-phase bi-directional meters under current BESCOM policy.
Can I upgrade from single-phase to three-phase myself?
No. The three-phase upgrade involves BESCOM's supply infrastructure and must be done through a formal load enhancement application. Your solar installer should assist with this process.
My installer is suggesting I need three-phase for a 4 kWp system — is that right?
Not necessarily. BESCOM allows single-phase net metering for systems up to 5 kWp in most cases. A 4 kWp system on a home with an existing 5 kW single-phase sanctioned load should not require a three-phase upgrade. Ask your installer to clarify their specific reason for the recommendation.
Do smart meters affect my solar earnings?
Smart meters read more accurately than older electromechanical or early digital meters, which is generally beneficial for solar — you're credited for every unit you export rather than having any measurement imprecision work against you.
