Solar Maintenance Checklist for Bangalore Homeowners: Keep Your System Running at Peak for 25 Years

Neglected solar systems lose 10–25% of their annual generation to avoidable issues — dirty panels, loose connections, a dusty inverter fan slowly overheating. Over 25 years, that lost generation is worth real money.

This guide gives you a practical, season-aware maintenance checklist for Bangalore homeowners — what you can do yourself, what needs a professional, and how to tell when something is genuinely wrong.


The four things that actually degrade a solar system

Before diving into the checklist, understand what you're maintaining against:

1. Soiling losses. Dust, bird droppings, and airborne particulates accumulate on panel surfaces and block sunlight. In Bangalore's urban environment, unclean panels can lose 5–15% of output. This is the most common and easiest-to-fix performance issue.

2. Thermal derating on the inverter. Your inverter generates heat while converting DC to AC. If its cooling vents are blocked by dust or if it's mounted in a poorly ventilated spot, it automatically reduces its output to protect itself. A clean inverter runs at full capacity; a dusty, hot inverter runs at 80–85%.

3. Electrical degradation. MC4 connectors, cable insulation, and junction box seals are exposed to UV radiation and temperature cycling for 25 years. Without periodic inspection, a loose or corroded connector can cause arcing — a serious fire hazard. This is why annual professional inspection matters even when everything "seems fine."

4. Structural fatigue. Mounting rails, clamps, and roof fasteners take wind load every monsoon season. A bolt that's 80% torque-tight when installed can be 50% loose after three monsoons. Panels that move even slightly in wind experience micro-cracking over time.

Walk around or look from a vantage point where you can clearly see your panels. You're checking for:

  • Visible dirt accumulation, especially bird droppings (these cause concentrated shading on individual cells and are more damaging than even dust)
  • Any cracked glass or physically damaged panels
  • Shadow intrusion from newly grown tree branches or construction nearby
  • Anything — debris, leaves, plastic bags — resting on the panels

If you see bird droppings concentrated on a panel, clean immediately rather than waiting for your scheduled cleaning cycle. A concentrated dropping can cause a "hot spot" in the affected cell that reduces output from the entire panel string.

Inverter display check

Your inverter has an LED display or screen that shows operating status. Check that:

  • It shows a green or "normal" operating status
  • The current day's generation reading looks consistent with expectations for the weather conditions
  • There are no fault codes or warning indicators lit

Most modern inverters also have a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connected monitoring app. If yours does, spend two minutes reviewing the previous week's generation curve. A healthy system shows a smooth bell curve each day — generation rising from 8–9 am, peaking around noon-1 pm, and declining to zero by 6–7 pm. Any unusual dips, flat spots, or premature shutdowns are worth investigating.


Quarterly tasks (30–45 minutes, DIY)

Panel cleaning — the single highest-ROI maintenance task

Clean your panels every 4–6 weeks in winter and summer, and after the pre-monsoon dusty period (April–May). During active monsoon months (July–August), rain often cleans the panels adequately, but check after long dry spells within the rainy season.

How to clean safely:

  • Clean in the early morning (before 8 am) or after 5 pm. Never clean panels in full afternoon sun — the thermal shock of cold water on hot glass can micro-crack cells, and water evaporates too quickly to clean effectively.
  • Use plain tap water with a soft cloth, sponge, or squeegee on an extension pole. A gentle hose spray is effective for loose dust.
  • Do not use abrasive cloths, steel wool, or harsh chemical cleaners. These scratch the anti-reflective coating on the glass.
  • Do not use high-pressure jet washers directly on panels — this can force water into junction boxes and damage seals.
  • Do not stand on panels or use panels as handholds while on the roof.

Inverter vent and fan cleaning

Your inverter should be wall-mounted in a shaded, well-ventilated location — typically an equipment room, garage wall, or a shaded outdoor wall. Quarterly, check that:

  • The cooling vents are free of dust and spider webs (a can of compressed air or a soft brush works well)
  • The cooling fan (if your inverter has one) is spinning freely when the inverter is generating power
  • Nothing is stored in front of the inverter blocking airflow — the front clearance should be at least 30 cm
  • The wall bracket or mounting is still securely fixed

DC and AC isolator switches

Your system has isolator switches on both the DC side (between panels and inverter) and AC side (between inverter and distribution board). Visually check that:

  • Both isolators are clearly in the "ON" position
  • There is no discolouration, burn marks, or visible damage around the isolator housing
  • Cable entries are sealed and intact

Do not operate these switches yourself unless you are specifically troubleshooting under professional guidance. DC solar cables carry live voltage even when the inverter is off, as long as light is hitting the panels.


Annual professional inspection — non-negotiable

Once a year, have a qualified electrician or your installer's service team conduct a full system inspection. This should cover:

Electrical safety checks:
- Earthing continuity test — verifies the system is properly grounded, critical for lightning and fault protection
- Insulation resistance (IR) test on DC cables — identifies degraded cable insulation before it becomes a hazard
- MC4 connector torque and contact resistance check — loose MC4s cause arcing fires; this cannot be assessed visually
- Surge protection device (SPD) inspection — SPDs protect against lightning spikes; they degrade after absorbing surges and need periodic replacement
- AC distribution board — check breaker integrity, wiring condition, and correct labelling

Structural checks:
- Mounting rail bolt torque verification — all fasteners should be at specified torque, not just "finger-tight"

Inverter service:

AMC vs self-maintenance: which approach is right for you?

AMC makes sense if:
- Your system is still within the warranty period and you want any issues documented for warranty claims
- You don't have the physical access or comfort to perform roof-level cleaning yourself
- Your installer offers a generation performance guarantee alongside the AMC

Self-maintenance makes sense if:
- You have easy, safe roof access and are comfortable doing it
- Your system has a good monitoring app that alerts you to anomalies
- You engage a local electrician for the annual electrical inspection separately

Regardless of which approach you choose, the annual professional electrical check is not optional — the electrical hazards it addresses (earthing continuity, arc-fault cable conditions) are not visible to the eye and cannot be self-assessed.

March–May (pre-monsoon): high priority cleaning season

Heavy monsoon rains are generally beneficial — they clean dust off panels naturally. You may find your generation per sunny day actually improves after a good monsoon shower once the sky clears.

October–February (winter): light maintenance season

Bangalore's winter is the best season for your solar system and requires the lightest maintenance. Morning dew can cause panels to self-clean partially. Light cleaning every 6 weeks is typically sufficient. Use this period to schedule any repair work identified during the annual inspection.
